About Wylam Railway Museum

Wylam is the birthplace of George Stephenson, 'The Father of Railways'. Wylam Railway Museum opened in 1981 to celebrate the 200th anniversary of his birth. The museum commemorates Wylam's unique contribution to railway history.
Famous local pioneers included George Stephenson, William Hedley, Timothy Hackwood and Nicholas Wood. This small museum is in a former classroom in the old village school, now known as The Falcon Centre.
Many of the displays of old photographs, models, posters and railway memorabilia were collected by local enthusiasts. The displays highlight the work of the railway pioneers, and the importance of Wylam Colliery waggonway in both inspiring and realising their ideas.
