About The Church House
Fine two-storey granite building dating from c.1540. Originally a place where 'church ales' were held in the 16th and 17th centuries ('ales' being parish festivities raising funds for the church), the building later became almshouses, a school and a workhouse, before resuming as the village school in 1875. The adjacent Sexton's Cottage is a NT shop and Dartmoor National Park information point.
