About British Engineerium
British Engineerium is a beautifully restored working Victorian pumping station and museum of mechanical antiquities.
The Engineerium is a unique, working steam museum telling the story of an important part of Britain's engineering heritage within the buildings of the fully restored Goldstone Pumping Station which once provided the drinking water for Hove and parts of Brighton.
Within the museum we also have the Giant's Toolbox Interactive Exhibition for children, with logically ordered interactive exhibits demonstrating simple mechanical principles where children can see at first hand the effects of using levers, gears and cranks, cylinders and pistons. They are then better able to understand and appreciate the workings of the full size and model engines depicting the history of steam power on land, sea and rail in the rest of the museum. A free Education Resource pack is available covering the technology of the pumping station and site.
The Engineerium provides an ideal springboard for teachers and children doing projects on, for example, the Victorians, industry and transport, steam power, and forces and motion in line with the National Curriculum, with particular reference to Key Stages II and III.
