About Bessie Surtees House

These two 16th and 17th-century merchants' houses are examples of Jacobean domestic architecture. The house is best known as the scene of the elopement of Bessie Surtees and John Scott, who later became Lord Chancellor of England. An exhibition illustrating the history of the two buildings is on the first floor.
